Police in India detained more than 1,100 people after protests against a Bollywood film, the BBC reported.
The protests were sparked by comments made by the film’s star, Shah Rukh Khan, about the fact that no Pakistani cricketer has been invited to an upcoming tournament. Hindu fringe party Shia Sena reacted angrily by vowing to block the release of the film “My Name is Khan”, which is released on Friday. Her supporters in Bombay started tearing up posters and pelting cinemas with stones, which is also the reason for the arrests. Extra security measures have been taken and 21,000 policemen will guard the 63 cinemas in Bombay where the film will be screened.
The 44-year-old actor stood by his words, but apologized to his co-stars in the film. The Bollywood star called for them to leave the production alone and direct their protests specifically at him. However, the Hindu party vowed to continue.
In the film, Khan plays the role of a Muslim man whose life in the US changes after the 9/11 attacks.
