Hundreds of protesters stormed the Swedish embassy in Baghdad early this morning, Reuters reported, quoted by BTA.
The news agency specifies that it refers to a source familiar with what is happening and to an eyewitness.
The source said no embassy staff were injured, without providing further details. Reuters notes that officials at the Swedish embassy in Baghdad did not immediately respond to the agency’s request for comment.
The protest was organized by supporters of Shiite religious leader Muqtada Sadr ahead of an expected burning of a copy of the Koran in Sweden. Videos posted to Telegram show people gathering around the embassy compound at 1 a.m. local time and storming it an hour later.
Videos released later showed smoke rising from a building that is part of the embassy compound.
Reuters notes that it has not been able to confirm the authenticity of the videos.
