Protesters Storm Swedish Embassy in Baghdad Following Controversial Gathering in Stockholm

An informed source and a Reuters witness said that hundreds of protesters stormed the Swedish embassy in Baghdad in the early hours of Thursday morning and set it on fire.

The storming of the Swedish embassy in Baghdad comes after the Swedish police allowed the organization of a small gathering in front of the Iraqi embassy in Stockholm, where the organizer intends to burn a copy of the Koran and the Iraqi flag, according to what the police and local media reported on Wednesday.

The organizer said he wanted to burn a copy of the Qur’an during the gathering, according to the Swedish News Agency, which indicated that he was the same person who organized the burning of the Qur’an in front of a mosque in Stockholm last month.

The Swedish police confirmed that the permission was not granted on the basis of an official request to burn religious books, but on the basis of holding a public gathering during which an “opinion” would be expressed under the constitutional right to freedom of assembly.
