Protesters Storm Russian Airport after Flight from Israel: Updates, Reactions, and Israeli Demands

The condition is critical for two of the around 20 who were injured, local health authorities in the Muslim Russian Republic said early Monday night.

Several hundred anti-Israel protesters stormed the airport on Sunday evening when a plane coming from Israel had landed.

Video footage obtained by Reuters shows a mob, most of them young men, waving Palestinian flags and smashing glass doors as they run through the airport building shouting “Allahu akbar”.

Videos on social media show a group of protesters trying to approach the plane.

The passengers on the plane are safe, security forces told Reuters later.

A small number of Israelis and Jews who were at the airport were isolated and brought to safety, a security source told the Israeli newspaper Haaretz.

Israel reacts

Airport authority Rosaviatsia’s security forces said it had removed all the protesters by 10.20pm local time.

The airport will be closed until 6 November. Russian authorities have ordered an investigation into the incident.

At the weekend, a Jewish center under construction in Nalchik, the capital of the neighboring Russian republic of Kabardino-Balkaria, was set on fire, according to local emergency services there.

– Israel expects the Russian authorities to protect all Israeli citizens and all Jews, said Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in a statement on Sunday evening.
