Dozens of demonstrators stormed Dagestan Airport on Sunday evening, after reports spread that a plane coming from Israel had landed, leading to its closure to air traffic.
The demonstrators entered the passenger terminal at Makhachkala Airport in the Muslim-majority Russian capital of Dagestan, reached the airport runway and crossed barriers with the aim of searching departing cars in search of Israeli passengers.
The Russian Aviation Agency announced that “following the storming of unidentified persons into the navigation area at Makhachkala Airport, the decision was taken to temporarily close it to arrival and take-off flights,” confirming that security forces had arrived at the location.
Later, the authorities said that the situation was “under control” at Dagestan airport after it was stormed by protesters.
Attack on Dagestan airport due to the war on Gaza
For its part, Israel urged the Russian authorities on Sunday to protect Israelis and Jews in the areas under its jurisdiction.
A Foreign Ministry statement said: “The Israeli ambassador to Moscow is working with the Russian authorities to ensure the safety of Israelis and Jews.”
The statement added, “Israel views attempts aimed at harming Israeli citizens and Jews anywhere as a dangerous matter.”
Israeli media broadcast footage from Makhachkala Airport in Dagestan showing dozens of young men, angry because of the war on Gaza, storming the runway in search of passengers on a flight coming from Tel Aviv.
According to the “Flight Radar” website, which specializes in tracking air traffic, a flight belonging to this company coming from Tel Aviv landed at seven o’clock in the evening local time at Makhachkala Airport.
According to the independent Russian website “Sota”, the flight landed in transit and is scheduled to take off again towards Moscow.
Before storming the arrivals hall, a number of demonstrators also attempted to check the passports of people leaving the airport in search of Israeli citizens.
One of them was seen carrying a sign that read, “There is no place for child killers in Dagestan,” and others chanted, “Allahu Akbar,” according to video clips.
