The statue was thrown into the city’s port on Saturday evening (local time).

Protesters have said that Columbus was responsible for the genocide and exploitation of indigenous Americans.

According to the newspaper The Baltimore Sun, the statue was owned by Baltimore and was inaugurated in 1984 by former Mayor William Donald Schaefer and then President Ronald Reagan.

A spokesman for current Mayor Bernard C. “Jack” Young, Lester Davis, told the newspaper that the statue had been demolished as part of a national and global re-examination of monuments “that can represent different things for different people.”

Statues of Columbus have also been overturned or damaged in the US cities of Miami, Richmond, St. Paul and Boston.
