Protesters in Khabarovsk demand trial of Putin / Article / LSM.lv

For the ninth week in a row in the Far East of Russia, several thousand people protested against the arrest of the Governor of the Khabarovsk region, Sergei Furgal.

Protests in Khabarovsk have not stopped since July. Today, in addition to demands for Furgal’s release, protesters also demanded the trial of Russian President Vladimir Putin. The posters also included slogans such as “Putin’s gang in court!” and “Putin kidnapped our governor.”

Khabarovsk Governor Furgal was arrested in July and taken to Moscow, where he was held in pre-trial detention. The committee of inquiry suspected him of organizing the murder of two businessmen in 2004 and 2005. Furgals and his supporters see the allegations as politically motivated. Furgals defeated the candidate of the ruling party “United Russia” in the governor’s election two years ago. Commentators explained this as a protest vote caused by growing dissatisfaction with Putin’s policies.
