Around 150 people gathered late Wednesday afternoon in Nantes in support of the Palestinian people, despite the ban on the demonstration issued a few hours earlier by the Loire-Atlantique prefecture. This decision was taken due to lack of prior declaration but also for reasons of public security in the current context in the Middle East.

Under Palestinian flags and chanting “solidarity with Palestine”, participants nevertheless gathered in the city center. They were supervised by a large force of law enforcement. People in possession of flags were quickly isolated and controlled.

“Make the massacre in Gaza heard”

“There were three arrests and 18 fines with fourth class fines [amende forfaitaire de 135 euros, NDLR]»indicate the State services at Figaro. The latter were not able to categorize the alleged offenses. In Lyon, during a similar gathering organized on Wednesday at the end of the day, one person was arrested and 32 fines issued for participation in an unauthorized demonstration.

“We are here to make the ongoing massacre in Gaza heard”told AFP Ali Farid, 30, who was fined. “I wonder about freedom of expression. I wonder about signs of solidarity that only go one way. When we talk about Israel, there are figures, details. When we talk about Palestine, we remain vague”regretted Salwa, a 44-year-old Franco-Palestinian, who did not wish to give her surname.

Rally in support of Israelis

This Thursday evening at 7:30 p.m., the Israelite Consistory of Nantes is organizing a rally – open to all – in support of the Israelis. It will be held inside the Nantes synagogue located near Boulevard Gabriel-Guist’Hau. This gathering is organized “in memory of the victims, for the healing of the injured and the release of the hostages”.

In Saint-Nazaire, a rally in favor of the Palestinian people will be organized on Friday at 5 p.m. in front of the Town Hall, as indicated Ocean Press . Members of the Palestine Solidarity Committee from the Nazaire region wish to protest against the blockade imposed on the inhabitants of the Gaza Strip. “The urgency now is to prevent the worst, to prevent the crushing of the Palestinian people”defends a member of the committee to the regional daily.

For the moment, the Loire-Atlantique prefecture was not able to indicate whether this event planned in Saint-Nazaire could be subject to a ban.
