Protester who took part in mass protest wave in Iran has been executed in prison

Iranian-Kurdish woman Mahsa Amini died in suspicious circumstances in a hospital in the Iranian capital Tehran. A few days earlier, she had been arrested by the morality police for wearing her headscarf too loosely, and had been roughly assaulted in a police station.

Like Mahsa Amini, Reza Rasaei, who was executed today, also belonged to the Kurdish minority in Iran.

He took part in the wave of protests that lasted for months and shook Iran to its foundations. The protests were led by young people, especially young women, under the slogan “Woman(s), Life, Freedom”.

The conservative religious regime responded to the wave of protests with harsh repression. Hundreds of people were killed, mainly demonstrators, but also members of the security forces. Thousands of demonstrators were arrested.
