Protest on the Museumplein against windmills: “They are literally in my backyard”

A large group of opponents of mega wind turbines demonstrated this afternoon on Museumplein. Distressed residents want the city council to refrain from installing very large and high wind turbines near residential areas. The main objection is the danger to public health.

Several tens of meters long banners are rolled out on the Museumplein. The protesters do not only come from the city, but also from places such as Deventer and Swifterbant. Ask most and they are not necessarily against the construction of more windmills, but rather not in their own backyard.

Residents are especially concerned about their health: the noise from the wind turbines would lead to stress and loss of sleep. The National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) recognizes that almost 10 percent of people can experience serious noise pollution within four, five hundred meters of a wind turbine. This leads to stress and related health problems.

“I’m here because I don’t feel heard. Because we’re not being listened to.”

ANNEMARIE VAN IREN – RESIDENT SCHELLINGWOUDE

Annemarie van Iren is one of the protesters. She lives beautifully on the Schellingwouderdijk in rural North, but also in the middle of a search area. The municipality is looking for places where wind turbines could possibly be built in the future.

In addition to the Ring-Noord, IJburg, Zeeburgereiland and Science Park are also being looked at. Annemarie only heard about the possible arrival of the wind turbines in December: “I am here because I do not feel heard. And because there is no way we can discuss alternatives with this municipal council.”

“Those things can reach a height of two hundred meters and they literally end up in my backyard,” says a young resident. “I want to continue to live in IJburg, and that is not possible this way.” Another resident has come to Museumplein with her daughter. “Placing so close to a residential core industry. I just get emotional, I just don’t understand.”

Annemarie is happy that young people are also making their voices heard. “We are always told that young people do want this. That they are for the energy transition, for the wind turbines. But young people will become the families of later. In five or ten years they will have children. Then they will start to worry.”
