Protest leader Moroccan Reef area gets asylum in the Netherlands NOW

Nawal Benaissa, a former leader of the protests in the Moroccan Rif area, has been granted asylum in the Netherlands. Amnesty International confirms this to NU.nl on Friday after reporting the NOS.

Benaissa asked in May 2019, political asylum in the Netherlands because she is being prosecuted in Morocco for her leading role in the 2017 Rif area demonstrations. for exercising violence against demonstrators.

Around four hundred arrests were made during the protests. Since leader Nasser Zefzafi was arrested and sentenced to twenty years in prison, Benaissa became one of the most famous faces of the protest movement.

Amnesty International reported last year that the woman has since been intimidated and harassed. Benaissa was sentenced to a suspended prison sentence of ten months in early 2019.
