Protest interrupted Macy’s Thanksgiving parade in New York, even with security reinforced by Israel-Hamas war – El Diario NY

Pro-Palestinian protesters were arrested after briefly disrupting the traditional Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade this morning in New York.

The protest broke out in 6th Avenue and 55th Street West around 10 a.m., 90 minutes after the 97th annual parade began. They were also reported riots at other off-route locations, such as Madison Square Park.

The incidents occurred despite the fact that the FBI, Department of Homeland Security (DHS), and New York Police Department (NYPD) had announced a reinforcement of security measures, alleging that the war between Israel and Hamas “has created an environment of greater threat” that made the event an “attractive target.” Prevention since the conflict began on October 7 has included monitor social media and other communications for potential terrorist threats.

On 55th this morning about 30 protesters used glue to join together and block the route, forcing the parade to continue around them. They were evicted by the NYPD and taken into custody, reported ABC News. The incident was captured on video by that channel.

The protesters jumped over the barricades and ran into the street, shouting. They carried a banner with the phrase “Free Palestine” and wore white jumpsuits sprayed with false blood and labeled with English words such as “colonialism, “genocide,” “imperialism,” “capitalism,” and “consumerism.” They refused to leave 6th Avenue until they were arrested. The red liquid seen on the street appeared to be grape juice.

Many of the parade spectators booed the protesters once they realized what was happening.

“We are closing the Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York,” said the sign calling for agitators to gather at the Madison Square Park at 11 a.m. At least 400 protesters gathered there, marching from the park toward Macy’s in Herald Square, blocking traffic along 6th Avenue while chanting in English “Long live the Intifada” and “See the American public? “Your taxes finance our misery.” The group was stopped by police at 6th Avenue and West 31st Street, forcing them to turn west and head toward Penn Station, he said. New York Post.

As is tradition, this Thursday the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade left the upper west side of Manhattan and toured two and a half miles until closing with a show in Herald Square. It was estimated that 3.5 million people would see it in person and many more on TV, through NBC y Peacock, from 8:30 am to 12 pm EST.

New York being the city with the largest Jewish population outside of Israel and also home to the United Nations Organization (UN)has been the scene of constant protests and arrests since the beginning of the war between Israel and the terrorist group Hamas.

On Tuesday the New York Governor Kathy Hochul, spoke about regional security. “We would be naive if we thought that the war in the Middle East does not have the possibility of spreading to other states, particularly New York; We have been the target of attacks in the past, but “We are very prepared,” Hochul said.

Concern remains about “lone actors using online platforms to express threats of violence against Jewish, Muslim and Arab communitiesas well as for committing simple and unsophisticated attacks that are difficult to detect in advance,” indicated a previous report.
