Protest in dozens of Polish cities against controversial media law

Bogdan Klich, senator and member of the opposition, took part in the protest in Krakow. “This is not just about the future of TVN,” he said at the protest rally in Poland’s second largest city. “It’s about the future of freedom of expression and of democracy.”

Unexpected mood

The media law was already passed in August by the Polish parliament, the Sejm, where PiS has a majority. But a month later, the bill was rejected in the Senate; there the PiS is in the minority. To end the blockade of the Senate overrulen, the law had to be passed again by the Sejm.

So that happened on Friday. The vote was unexpected: it was not on the agenda of the lower house and was discussed and dealt with at the last minute. That only took a few minutes.
