In October 2022, slogans calling for the removal of Chinese President Xi Jinping were hung in Sitongqiao, Beijing, China. So far, the area is still a strictly controlled area. It is reported that an associate professor at Tsinghua University in China went to Sitong Bridge to take photos in order to prove that China has freedom of speech. As a result, he was detained by the police.

Voice of America and Radio Free Asia reported that some netizens recently uploaded screenshots of conversations on Tsinghua University’s on-campus communication platform “Shudong” to the social platform “X”. The screenshot shows that Cai Wanhuan, a scholar who serves as an associate professor in the Department of Political Science at Tsinghua University, talked about freedom of speech in China during class. According to screenshots of the conversation, in order to prove that “China has freedom of speech,” Cai Wanhuan personally went to Sitong Bridge to take photos for verification. As a result, he was taken away on the spot and detained for questioning. It is understood that Cai Wanhuan expressed his dissatisfaction on social media afterwards.

Zhao Lanjian, a former Chinese media person, said that he asked a teacher who teaches at Tsinghua University for confirmation on this matter. Zhao Lanjian said: “This is 100% correct. A friend from Tsinghua University sent me a screenshot of their internal work. The teacher made a bet with his classmates in class. He said that China has freedom of speech. He thought of Sitong I went to the bridge to test and take pictures, but the alarm system was triggered, and he was taken away later.”

Zhao Lanjian, who is currently in the United States, believes that Cai Wanhuan obviously did not anticipate the consequences of this move before going to Sitong Bridge. Zhao Lanjian said: “He must be stupid. Because he is a teacher who teaches politics, his mind has been dogmatized by communism. The way of thinking of Chinese politics teachers is stereotyped, and they have been receiving communist education since childhood. , forming cognitive paranoia. China’s heavily guarded management system has exceeded the prediction of this politics teacher.”

On the eve of the opening of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China in 2022, Peng Lifa (screen name Peng Zaizhou) hung a protest slogan on Sitong Bridge in Haidian District, Beijing, which attracted widespread attention from the international community. Demonstrator Peng Lifa was taken away by the police afterwards and his whereabouts are still unknown. The Peng Lifa incident was also regarded by the outside world as the first protest openly challenging the Chinese Communist regime on the streets of Beijing since the June 4th incident in 1989. According to information released by Human Rights Defense Network on January 7, Peng Lifa is still secretly detained by the authorities.

According to the official website of Tsinghua University, Cai Wanhuan, who was born in 1983, is a PhD graduate in political economics from the School of Economics of Renmin University of China and is currently an associate professor in the teaching and research series of the School of Marxism at Tsinghua University. It is understood that students’ evaluations of the “Socialism with Chinese Characteristics” course taught by Cai Wanhuan are mostly positive.

Tsinghua University is regarded by many as the highest university in China. Current commentator Cai Shenkun said that the incident not only reflects Cai Wanhuan’s naivety, but also reflects the sadness of the academic community. Cai Shenkun said: “Tsinghua University used to be a science and engineering university, and they (Tsinghua students) have always been neither sensitive nor concerned about politics. In the past, we said that (students) who really had liberal thoughts were at Peking University, not at Peking University. Tsinghua University. In the past ten years or so, Tsinghua has become more and more left-wing. Whether this happened in Tsinghua or in other universities, it is a tragedy for the entire Chinese universities.”
