Protest Erupts in Burladingen-Killer Against New Asylum Seeker Accommodation

As of: 07/20/2023 4:46 p.m

In the Burladinger district of Killer there is a protest against a new accommodation for asylum seekers. As reported by the media, the mood boiled up to two information events.

According to media reports, District Administrator Günther-Martin Pauli (CDU) was booed and shouted down at an information event in the Burladingen district of Killer on Wednesday evening. The Zollernalb district wants to set up accommodation for up to 60 asylum seekers in a former inn in Killer. This is met with protests. The village with almost 600 inhabitants already has refugee accommodation.

The loud protest was not unexpected. There had already been a dispute on Tuesday: Pauli is said to have unexpectedly appeared in Killer at an information evening held by the mayor Gerd Schäfer on the same topic. The district administrator had to leave the event. Participants had reported to the Südwest Presse that the mood had been aggressive at times.

Anonymous flyer drums for information event on refugee accommodation

The event on Wednesday, on the other hand, was convened by District Administrator Pauli himself. Shortly before that, a flyer was distributed in the village, which can also be found on the Internet. No one is listed there by name, but the “citizens of Killem” were asked to “be present” at this event.

The background to the call is therefore, among other things, the short-term nature of the information event. A large part of the population should not have noticed anything about the plans for asylum accommodation.

The protesters are not Nazis or xenophobic, it says there. However, they only want to keep the peace in the village. The place has already done enough to accommodate refugees. Monika Scherer, for example, lives opposite the former Lamm inn. She is afraid that it will become a hostel for asylum seekers. The young men who are to be accommodated there would have no opportunity to occupy themselves in Killer. She doesn’t know what kind of crime that entails and fears that the small town will be overwhelmed.

Zollernalbkreis needs up to 300 new places to live

A spokesman for the district office told SWR that 66 asylum seekers had been assigned to the Zollernalb district in July alone. More refugees are coming from Syria, Afghanistan and North African countries. The fact is that the Zollernalb district needs 200 to 300 additional places to live. For this purpose, the district office would like to prepare the Gasthof Lamm in the middle of Killer, among other things. For how many asylum seekers is still open.

Citizens’ petitions are planned in Killer

District Administrator Günther-Martin Pauli regrets the overheated atmosphere in Burladingen-Killer. He informed the SWR. He is now asking the city of Burladingen to check whether there are other possible accommodations. He also wants to continue the search throughout the Zollernalb district. It is still unclear whether the planned accommodation in Killer is finally off the table. In any case, the residents of Killer want to continue protesting and initiate a citizens’ initiative.
