Protest against Höcke and Pegida in Dresden

Dresden (AP) – In Dresden, a broad alliance was formed on Monday against the nationalist and xenophobic Pegida movement and the appearance of AfD right-wing winger Björn Höcke.

According to eyewitness estimates, around 1,500 people protested within sight and hearing distance against Pegida, Höcke and the Dresden AfD member of the Bundestag Jens Maier, who was campaigning on his own behalf. Maier is a direct candidate in one of the Dresden constituencies. Höcke did not appear until late in the evening. He played down the corona virus and denied that there was ever an epidemic situation in Germany.

The protest was so loud at times that the Pegida organizers considered breaking up their rally with around 2000 participants. In between, the Pegida people ran through Dresden and had to avoid road blockades in two places. According to the police, the event remained largely relaxed – there were only marginal insults and scuffles, it said.

Hundreds of Dresden residents gathered on the other side of the Elbe in the afternoon to promote tolerance and cosmopolitanism at a “banquet for everyone”. On the main street, they took their places at a 300-meter-long table to talk to others over food and drink. 64 institutions and associations took part in the round table, to which people brought their favorite dishes to offer to others.
