Protest against Austrian Grand Prix result: Aston Martin accuses race management

today, 22:04 | by Stephen Koolschijn

The Aston Martin team successfully protested the result of the Austrian Grand Prix last weekend. According to Fernando Alonso, the protest was not directed against the competition, but against the race management. The Spaniard also disagrees that the Red Bull Ring is the cause of the many track limit violations, it is the drivers themselves.

During the Austrian Grand Prix, quite a few penalties were already handed out. Several drivers exceeded the track limits more often than allowed, but after the race Aston Martin protested against the result. According to the British racing stable, more penalties should have been handed out. The team were proved right and Alonso and Lance Stroll both moved up a spot to score a few extra points in the battle for second place in the Constructors’ Championship.

Aston Martin was the only team to take action and it earned a number of other drivers, including Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz, an additional penalty. Alonso would like to make one thing clear in Silverstone. “The protest was not against an opponent or against another team. We lodged a protest because no penalties had been imposed,” the Spaniard added Motorsport-Total.com.

Drivers are responsible for themselves

Last week, many prominent people spoke negatively about the many violations of the track limits in Austria. However, Alonso and Stroll were not given a time penalty and this proves, according to the 41-year-old, that it is not that difficult to color within the lines. “The problem in Austria is not that they have to tear down the circuit and build something new. It also works in Monaco. We don’t get too close to the wall there, because then we crash and we don’t make it to the finish. The same applies in Singapore. In Austria, ten drivers are probably trying to take a little more risk than the ten other drivers. In the end they lost a few seconds with that, but that’s how it goes,” said Alonso.
