Protecting Yourself from Mosquito-Borne Diseases in Europe: Prevention and Treatment Measures Revealed by Pavel Cepraga

According to the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control, Europe faces an increasing risk of mosquito-borne diseases. How should we protect ourselves from these insects and what measures should be taken if we have been stung, Pavel Cepraga tells us.

Mosquitoes are insects specific to several regions of the planet, and sometimes they can transmit infections through their bite. The number of cases of diseases associated with mosquito bites has increased in Europe due to climate changes favoring the migration of insects, notes Noi.md with reference to radiomoldova.

Although diseases such as dengue, yellow fever or Zika are not characteristic in the Republic of Moldova, in 2019 the first case of West Nile virus infection was confirmed in the country, and most people bitten by mosquitoes develop symptoms such as redness, itching or allergic reactions.

Doctors recommend washing the site of the sting with soap and water to avoid infections, applying creams or ointments that calm the itching and help regenerate the skin, and if fever, headache, nausea and vomiting occur, urgent consultation with the doctor is recommended.

More recently, a study published at the end of June in the journal Acta Dermato-Venereologica mentions that the local application of heat to the sting area for 5-10 minutes reduces the itching sensation in about 81% of cases.

Take care of your health and don’t forget to get your international vaccinations if your next trip requires it.
