According to research conducted by the team from Pradeo, applications called File Recovery and Data Recovery (com.spot.music.filedate) and File Manager (com.file.box.master.gkd), which were intended to be used to manage and recover data, in in fact, they sent users’ private information to servers in China. These programs have been installed as many as 1.5 million times, indicating a huge privacy breach problem.

The study showed that both applications had access not only to users’ private photos and other media, but also collected information such as the device’s location, telecommunications service provider and detailed system data. Moreover, removing these applications turns out to be problematic because they can hide their presence in the system.

So, if you have been using any of these apps, experts recommend that you immediately delete them and change the passwords of all the accounts and services you use on your smartphone.

How to protect yourself against digital threats?

Regular updates: Always keep your system and applications updated. New versions often include security fixes.
Download applications only from trusted sources: Although Play Store is the main source for Android users, it sometimes contains apps with hidden threats.
Check application permissions: If an application requests access to unnecessary data, e.g. flashlight wants access to contacts, this should make you vigilant.
Install antivirus: A good antivirus scans your device regularly for threats.
Be careful when opening links: Don’t open links from unknown sources or install apps from untrusted places.

Remember that in the digital age, our data is more valuable than ever before. Take care of your safety and protect your privacy.
