Population groups such as infants, small children, the elderly and the chronically ill suffer particularly from high temperatures and are less able to adapt physically to the heat. It is especially important for them to follow a few rules. The three «golden rules» are:
Avoid physical exertion Keep away from heat – cool body Drink plenty – eat lightly
The city of Bern provides the population with a digital city map www.bern.ch/Wärmeplan, where shaded areas such as forests, parks, avenues, the outdoor pools and all fountains with drinking water are listed.
Keep leaflets ready
The leaflets of the health service contain the most important recommendations for behavior during hot summer days. They show how we can enjoy the beautiful weather without suffering sun and heat damage. The leaflets “10 tips for dealing with the summer heat”, “Temperatures around 30 degrees: protect small children well” and “Heat waves: be careful with sports and leisure” and much more information can be found at www.bern.ch/sommerwärme.
You can also look after those around you during exceptional heat waves: pay attention to the health and well-being of vulnerable people, elderly or single neighbors or family members. Don’t hesitate to ask for help in the neighborhood or from organizations if you need it.
