Protecting the Rights of Expatriate Workers: Qatar’s National Human Rights Commission Raises Awareness about Extreme Heat

Doha: Qatar National Human Rights Commission with an awareness campaign among workers about extreme heat. The campaign is also part of protecting the rights of expatriate workers. NHRC’s campaign targets workers in the construction, manufacturing and delivery service sectors.

Qatar has restrictions on outdoor activities during hot weather. Afternoon break is mandatory from 10 am to 3 pm till September 15. The campaign aims to secure rights including: NHRC Chairperson Mariam bint Abdullah Al Atiyah said that according to the Qatari constitution, there is no difference in human rights between foreigner and native.

The organization strives to protect and ensure the human rights of workers. There has been great progress in this regard in the last few years. Careful interventions are needed to protect delivery service workers from heat exposure. The aim of the NHRC campaign is to sensitize employers and workers about the Midday Rest Act.
