Protecting Spallumcheen’s Water: A Call for Conservation

A community consulting firm asks, “Are you giving water, Spall?”

Urban Systems, in partnership with the community of Spallumcheen, wants to raise awareness of the critical importance of water conservation.

According to Urban Systems, the Okanagan has one of the highest water consumption rates per person in Canada, meaning the Okanagan has less water available per person than anywhere else in the country.

Spall’s water comes primarily from streams and aquifers, which are an important source for both drinking water and agriculture. Overexploitation and pollution of these sources could lead to water shortages, reduced crop yields and environmental damage.

“The community of Spallumcheen is committed to protecting local water resources to ensure a sustainable future, but we cannot do this alone,” said Mayor Christine Fraser. “Water conservation is everyone’s responsibility and we all play a key role in protecting this important resource.”

The community calls on residents, businesses and agricultural producers to take a proactive step towards a sustainable future for the region’s water supply. This includes using modern irrigation technologies, repairing leaks, using water efficient equipment and harvesting rainwater.

“If everyone does their part to use a little less water today, we can create a better future for our crops and our community,” added Fraser.
