Hundreds of Transavia flights have already been canceled and more may follow. The Consumers’ Association therefore advises to opt for a package holiday. “Choose as much protection as possible.”
This spring, passengers regularly hear that their Transavia flight is being canceled because the airline temporarily does not have enough aircraft available. Fortunately, you have many rights as a passenger. Transavia must provide a replacement flight.
“If you are not enthusiastic about the alternative and you have found something better with another airline, you can also book there at Transavia’s expense,” says Babs van der Staak of the Consumers’ Association.
“You can also move your trip to the fall break if you prefer to go. Otherwise you will get your money back.” According to Van der Staak, it’s nice that you have so many rights as a passenger, but it still causes a hassle.
Cover up for flight cancellation through package travel
Covering yourself for such a cancellation, even if the cause is something other than the lack of aircraft, is not really possible. A cancellation insurance is also not intended for this. They will refer you to the airline. However, you can limit the possible consequences if you book now. “Choose as much protection as possible,” advises Van der Staak.
You can do this by preferably booking a package holiday, instead of a flight and an accommodation separately. Because if you book separately, then the question is whether you can cancel or rebook your hotel so short in advance, for example. And suppose your replacement flight leaves one or two days later, such a hotel may not take that into account.
It is therefore better to book your entire holiday together, says Van der Staak. “That provider simply has a duty of care, so it has to get to work for you.”
Book directly with an airline
If you book your flight and stay separately, then go for a ticket with the airline itself, advises Van der Staak. “A ticket site sometimes seems cheaper in the basic price, but is often not because of all kinds of additional costs.”
It also appears easier to make an adjustment to the ticket with the direct booking, for example. Another difference is that you usually get your money back from the airline within seven days in case of delay or cancellation. With a ticket site it usually takes a little longer.
Extra compensation for late cancellation
With the Transavia cancellations, passengers usually heard two weeks in advance whether their flight would be cancelled. If your flight is canceled less in advance, you may be entitled to extra compensation.
The amount differs, depending on the flight distance and the delay suffered if you get a replacement flight. “If a flight to Australia is seriously delayed, it can cost hundreds of euros,” says Van der Staak.
