Police Chief Hendrick Balling is a bicycle officer at the Nuremberg East Police Department and is very familiar with the issue of bicycle theft. br He explains that the perpetrators are currently mainly targeting expensive bikes, such as e-bikes. The thieves are always coming up with new ideas to make sure that the bikes are not recognizable as stolen goods. In one case, for example, the perpetrator had repainted the entire bike. The manufacturer, type and frame number were no longer recognizable. The police were nevertheless able to determine the frame number using a number of technical procedures.
The more conspicuous the bike, the more difficult it is to steal
On the other hand, owners can also make the bike unattractive to thieves by painting it. According to Balling, the more conspicuous and individual the bike is, the more difficult it is for criminals to sell it later. Individual attachments or eye-catching stickers also make the bike safer from thieves. It is also easier for the police to find it in the event of theft.
