Prostitution will continue to be taxed in Sweden

(ANSA) – STOCKHOLM, OCTOBER 16 – The Swedish government has decided that it will continue to tax prostitution. To date, prostitution is taxed like the sale of any other service but a proposal to abolish this taxation has been considered due to the moral aspect that sees the Swedish state cashing in on prostitutes. After several months of studying the issue, the government has now concluded that it will maintain the tax. This is because it is estimated that a possible abolition of taxes would increase the risks for prostitutes who would be even more vulnerable to traffickers and criminal gangs, as reported by the Swedish public service radio, Sveriges Radio. In Sweden, selling sexual services is legal, but buying them is a crime. Legislation introduced since 1999 criminalizes the purchase of sexual services with a penalty that can range from a fine to a year in prison. The non-profit organization Realstars sponsored a recent awareness campaign which featured signs with the words in English in large letters: “Buy sex. Pay with prison.” posted on public transport.
