An avenue in the borough of Queens, New York, has become the scene of prostitution, day and night, which worries members of the community.
Roosevelt Avenue, near Junction Boulevard, is now marked by the presence of sex workers who solicit clients in the middle of the street, no matter the time of day, despite the presence of children nearby, according to the “New York Post”.
One weekday, a dozen scantily clad people solicited passers-by, including the daily journalist.
One sex worker offered a massage with a “happy ending” for $40 and another offered “full body massages” for $80.
Parents have not hidden their concerns, since these services are offered in front of various shops and a dentist.
Prosecutors in the sector reportedly decided to stop prosecuting sex workers. They would be much more numerous since the arrival of illegal migrants, unable to work legally.
“I’ve lived here all my life and I’ve never seen anything like this,” said city councilor Francisco Moya, who asked the mayor for help in fixing the problem.
Mr Moya was particularly infuriated by a Hispanic group’s “Market of Sweethearts” video, which has more than 19,000 YouTube subscribers. The page promotes sexual services.
“It’s posted on Facebook, YouTube and it says, ‘Here’s a destination for you, you know, learn how to negotiate with prostitutes. And they literally tell you the price of any sex act they’d be willing to perform. C is unheard of,” he added.
Even though authorities say they are focusing on johns, pimps and traffickers, locals say law enforcement is non-existent. This year, the police made six arrests in connection with prostitution in this area. There have been no arrests for sex trafficking.
Last year, there were two arrests for sex trafficking in the area.
“We have been working to proactively deter individual purchasers of these services,” the New York City Police Department spokesperson said.
