MAGELANG CITY (wartamagelang.com) – To help people with disabilities remain productive, the Tidar University Community Service Team (UNTIDAR) distributed prosthetic limbs. This prosthetic leg project was developed by the UNTIDAR research team in collaboration with the Center for Innovation of Medical Equipments and Devices (CIMEDs) UGM.
Head of the UNTIDAR research team, Prof. Dr. Suyitno, said, persons with disabilities who lose limbs will experience a reduction in physical activity, both in mobility, work activities, and daily activities. The loss of limbs, said Suyitno, was caused by birth defects, accidents, disease and amputations.
Suyitno said, disabilities with the condition of losing part of a leg often occur in society. If they are not given assistive devices in the form of prosthetic limbs, said Suyitno, it will deprive them of the opportunity to be active and work.
“This prosthetic leg was developed by the UNTIDAR research team in collaboration with the Center for Innovation of Medical Equipments and Devices (CIMEDs) UGM,” added Suyitno, yesterday.
“Currently the prosthetic leg has been produced by PT Ontiyus Karya Mulia,” he continued.
Suyitno explained that the prosthetic leg had been handed over to Mrs. Dwi Lestari, 53. Mrs. Dwi, said Suyitno, had an amputation above the knee caused by a blocked blood vessel.
He added, Dwi Lestari is a housewife who runs a fruit juice business every day. As a result of the amputation, his business activities stopped because he could not go to the market to shop for raw materials.
“The prosthetic leg that was given to Dwi Lestari is a type of prosthetic leg above the knee. The prosthesis consists of a sole, a single axis ankle joint, an adapter, a tube, a multi axis knee, an adapter and a socket. In addition to the socket and palm made of stainless steel AISI304,” he explained.
Suyitno explained, although many types of prosthetic limbs have been developed for above-knee amputations, their shape is still very simple, making it uncomfortable for the user. Prosthetic legs with single-axis ankle and multi-axis knee types are still imported from other countries. In addition, the price of this type of prosthetic leg is still expensive for domestic users.
“In order to meet domestic needs, reduce dependence on imports, and make products affordable for the community, the UNTIDAR research team took the initiative to develop and produce these prosthetic limbs for the domestic market,” he explained.
The recipient of prosthetic limbs, Dwi Lestari, 53, a resident of Margorejo, Pati Regency, admitted that after obtaining prosthetic limbs, he had to practice and get used to walking using prosthetic limbs.
“I plan to sell juice again after I can carry out my normal activities using the prosthetic limbs from Tidar University,” he said (see/aha)
