New Law Aims to Ease Financial Burden for Breast Cancer Patients in France
On January 29, 2025, French deputies passed a groundbreaking law designed to alleviate the financial strain faced by breast cancer patients. The legislation targets the importent out-of-pocket expenses that often accompany treatment, wich average around 1,400 euros per patient. These costs, not covered by health insurance, include essential support care such as chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and breast palpation, all of which are already reimbursed by social security. Though, additional expenses, such as those for breast reconstruction, psychological consultations, and specialized care products, remain a heavy burden for many.
Aurélie, a breast cancer patient who began her treatment in 2020, shared her experience. “We have care to be given, especially to our nails that burn and fall,” she explained. She also highlighted the need for medications to manage side effects like vaginal dryness and joint pain, as well as specialized shampoos to reduce itching during hair loss. aurélie estimates these support care costs at 150 euros per month,a significant sum for many patients. The financial strain intensifies for those undergoing breast reconstruction after a mastectomy. Aurélie revealed, “I have a remaining cost of 3,500 euros for my first intervention,” with additional surgeries expected to add another 2,000 euros. “Everything is at our expense,” she lamented, describing the situation as “wholly revolting.”
The new law addresses these challenges by proposing measures to supervise fee overruns for breast reconstructions, with negotiations set to begin soon with medical professionals. It also ensures full reimbursement for prostheses, nipple tattooing, and specialized bras. Additionally, the legislation introduces financial support for psychological consultations and nutritionist visits, as well as a care package to cover expenses for body creams, nail polish, and shampoos.
While the exact amounts for these reimbursements will be steadfast by a later decree, the law marks a significant step toward improving the quality of life for breast cancer patients.
