Suara.com – A new study shows that the use of glycolysis-enhancing drugs such as terazosin, which is usually used to treat prostate enlarged, can reduce the risk of disease Parkinson in men.
Parkinson’s is a nervous system disorder that affects movement, causing people to experience tremors frequently. Parkinson’s occurs because the brain lacks a chemical called dopamine.
Although Parkinson’s disease primarily affects movement, dopamine loss can also cause non-motor symptoms, including depression, dementia, trouble sleeping, and low energy.

The majority of treatments focus on restoring dopamine levels. Recently, many studies have investigated ways to increase energy levels using a metabolic pathway called glycolysis.
Glycolysis is one of the first metabolic pathways to produce energy. This pathway breaks down glucose into various types of molecules which are used for further energy production.
The findings of a 2014 study suggest that increased oxidative stress from early Parkinson’s development causes impaired glucose metabolism. Meanwhile, the results of a 2019 study suggest that increasing levels of energy production can slow down the onset of Parkinson’s symptoms.
A previous study concluded that a drug used to treat an enlarged prostate, called terazosin, can increase cellular energy levels by increasing the activity of the enzymes needed to break down glucose in glycolysis.
Many risk factors can contribute to the development of Parkinson’s disease, and the study did not look at other variables – such as head trauma or exposure to pesticides – that could promote further disease progression.
