The fight against advanced prostate cancer has made significant progress thanks to researchers in Montreal.
A new treatment, which was initiated at the CHUM, delays the progression of metastases and postpones the time of death.
The Montreal hospital was a member of a major international study conducted in 167 establishments across 17 countries.
The researchers, including Dr. Fred Saad of the CHUM, used for the first time a combination of three types of already existing drugs. They delay the progression of metastases in prostate cancer.
The results of research initiated seven years ago have just been published in the prestigious scientific journal “The Lancet Oncology”.
The patient population included in this study was really at the most advanced stage of the disease, beyond stage 4. And treatment prolongs the time to progression of metastases on average by about seven months. which represents an improvement of over 30%.
A major advance, since usually, patients with metastases who no longer respond to treatment can die within two years.
