On Tuesday afternoon, former President Nikos Anastasiadis discussed Cyprus, energy and internal issues with President Christodoulidis, in a meeting that lasted about an hour.
Leaving the Presidential Office, the former President said that he had a particularly friendly, but also creative meeting with the President of the Republic, during which they discussed the latest developments in the Cyprus issue and energy, as well as internal issues.
“And I am happy because the policies that are followed create the prospects for a continuation of a successful government, but also with new ideas, which are always welcome. And it is also expected to see policy changes in some areas that can be more creative. Therefore, I want to express my absolute satisfaction with the meeting”, he said.
Asked if he sees any developments regarding the President of the Republic’s proposal for more active involvement of the EU in the Cyprus issue, the former President of the Republic said that he believes it is an effort in the right direction.
“It was something we had sought before and I hope it will be successful. It is an important forward movement, let’s not forget that as a result of the policy we followed in Crans Montana, the European Union was present for the first time”, he said.
According to Mr. Anastasiadis, a special representative who will have a role, so that any solution to create a state that is consistent with the European acquis, with the protection of human rights, etc., will not be in the interest of a community, but both.
“It will not only benefit the Greek Cypriot side, but also the Turkish Cypriot side and especially Turkey. Therefore, it is a goal that is set, and with persistence, i.e. efforts, we hope that it will be successful”, he said.
Asked to refer to the situation between the Legal and Audit Service, Mr. Anastasiadis said he did not wish to comment on “anything related to foreign to my new tasks and these (tasks) are to monitor and where I can advise”.
He said that beyond that he does not want to get involved in issues that he should not be dealing with, but he added that everyone should know what the Constitution provides and the Constitution, he continued, is clear.
“Misinterpretations, superpowers, arbitrariness, I don’t think they are allowed by anyone,” he said.
