ProSol project: e-health at the service of isolated populations


Improve the quality of life of isolated populations

The “ProSol” project (contraction of proximity and solidarity), co-financed by the European program for Cross-border Cooperation Interreg ALCOTRA (Latin Alps Cross-border COoperation) and implemented by the Piedmont Region in Italy, is part of an approach whose objective is to develop new socio-health services for vulnerable people in the Franco-Italian cross-border areas.

In this project, the University Hospital of Nice is working on the development of a global approach to an E-Health system for patients with certain chronic neurological disorders. This system aims to provide a concrete response to the shortcomings and needs of rural or mountainous Franco-Italian cross-border areas, where the isolation and distance from medico-social structures have a real impact on the health of the inhabitants. Indeed, the population of these areas is increasingly elderly, losing their autonomy and/or sick with limited access to healthcare.

Thus, the actions of the project are reflected in three aspects: on the one hand, the deployment of a telemedicine platform which aims to improve the monitoring of the care pathway of these remote populations and, on the other hand, the launch of an e-learning platform to raise awareness among health professionals as well as patients and their carers about the various pathologies that concern the project. Finally, a telemedicine rehabilitation project has also been developed in order to offer patients personalized physiotherapy care.

Telemedicine to monitor patients

The telemedicine platform makes it possible to remotely monitor patients with neuromuscular pathologies (diseases that affect the muscles, nerves and neuromuscular junction), neurodegenerative diseases (such as Alzheimer’s disease) and neurodevelopmental disorders (such as autism) thanks to teleconsultations and tele-expertise with professionals from the Nice University Hospital. The objective is to offer this fragile and isolated public telemedicine tools to ensure the specific management and monitoring of their disease. Ultimately, the large-scale deployment of a tool will facilitate access to care for isolated populations, and thus reduce inequalities in access to health services. The multiplicity of actors involved in the daily follow-up of a patient is often great, especially after hospitalization. This tool therefore makes it easier to coordinate care to better support patients and their families.

E-learning: educational content to increase knowledge

The ProSol project also includes an e-learning component whose objective is to offer quality educational content. Increasing the knowledge of patients, their caregivers and local doctors on the three pathologies that concern the project is one of the major priorities to better prevent them. Created by the multi-professional and multidisciplinary teams of the Nice University Hospital, the educational content of the program contains more than forty animated videos and self-assessment of knowledge. Those formations e-learning on neurodevelopmental diseases, neurodegenerative diseases and neuromuscular diseases are available completely free of charge. The ultimate goal is to train an ever wider audience to improve the quality of life of patients and their caregivers, in particular among at-risk populations such as women, seniors and young adults.

Télékinect: personalized self-rehabilitation program at home

The telekinect project consists of offering patients concerned by the ProSol project personalized physiotherapy care, via a physical self-rehabilitation program adapted to the clinical severity of each patient. After a training session, participants will be monitored and coached remotely via the telemedicine platform by physiotherapists and neurologists specializing in functional rehabilitation. They will also be equipped with a connected watch that will collect physiological data remotely in real time in the natural environment of patients. The connected watch is coupled with an innovative technology using artificial intelligence to analyze and categorize a large amount of data, which will make it possible to identify digital biomarkers specific to each group of patients. The TELEKINECT project will therefore offer therapeutic monitoring that is more suited to the clinical condition of each patient and more accessible to isolated populations.
