Prosecutors in the US state of Minnesota want former police officer Derek Chauvin to be sentenced to 30 years in prison for killing George Floyd. Chauvin was born at the end of April found guilty on all charges and will hear on June 25 what punishment he will receive. His actions have “shaken the conscience of the country”, the prosecution said.
Chauvin’s lawyers want him to receive only a suspended sentence. According to them, the then officer was unaware that he was committing a crime and was merely carrying out his lawful duty.
Chauvin pressed his knee to the neck of arrested black man George Floyd on the street in Minneapolis for minutes last May. The 46-year-old man died in hospital. Images of the arrest sparked protests around the world against racism and police brutality. After the incident, Chauvin was fired from the police force.
