Prosecutors have formally booked Lee Jae-myeong, the head of the Democratic Party of Korea, as a suspect in the alleged payment of remittances to North Korea by the Ssangbangwool Group.
The Suwon District Prosecutor’s Office 6th Criminal Investigation Department reported that Lee ordered former chairman Kim Seong-tae of the Ssangbangbang Group, who was the governor of Gyeonggi-do, to pay $8 million to the North instead, including $5 million for the North Korean smart farm project and $3 million for the governor’s visit to North Korea. He was charged with bribery to a third party.
In February, the prosecution handed over former chairman Kim Seong-tae to trial on charges of embezzlement and breach of trust, and also charged him with illegally transferring $8 million to North Korea on behalf of Gyeonggi-do.
In June, the prosecution obtained a statement from Lee Hwa-young, former vice-governor of Gyeonggi-do, to the effect that ″Former Chairman Kim requested expenses for the Gyeonggi-do governor’s visit to North Korea and reported it to CEO Lee.
As the prosecution booked Lee as a suspect, there is an observation that a summons investigation of Lee, who is considered the peak of the suspicion, is imminent.
