Prosecutor to review case of young black man shot in New York – NBC New England

A New York prosecutor is reviewing the deadly 2010 police shooting of a young black man from Massachusetts, he announced Thursday.

Danroy “DJ” Henry of Easton was a 20-year-old at Pace University when he was shot and killed by a white police officer in Pleasantville, New York, in 2010. His family has long lobbied for him to be. review his death, and he received endorsements from celebrities like Jay-Z and Rihanna last year.

The Westchester District Attorney’s Office is conducting a review of the shooting and how it was investigated with the help of a former federal judge, District Attorney Miriam Rocah announced Thursday.

The review will also investigate the shooting of Kenneth Chamberlain, a 68-year-old black veteran with a mental illness who was shot at his home in 2011.

“The Henry and Chamberlain families and our community have strongly felt that additional independent review is needed to heal the open wounds from these shootings. It is in that spirit that this review will be conducted,” Rocah said in a statement.

Both deaths were investigated by grand juries, who did not press charges for the officers who shot the men. The process was sealed, following judicial protocol.

However, the Henry family later sued and have said they unearthed evidence of tampering that they believe supports a wrongful shooting designation. They don’t know if those details were ever considered in court.

Henry’s sister, Amber Henry, called Thursday’s announcement “bittersweet” and said the family is still keenly sorry for the loss of DJ.

“We remain hopeful. We remain anxious. We remain determined and above all we remain in our armor, ready to continue the fight for one of the greatest humans whom I was blessed to call my brother,” he said in a statement.
