A prosecutor investigating the attack on a live television broadcast in Ecuador has been shot dead. This happened in the city of Guayaquil, the justice department there confirmed on Wednesday.

Prosecutor Cesar Suarez investigated who was behind the armed raid on the TC Television studio in Guayaquil. That attack was part of a wave of violence in the country.

More than two hundred prison staff were taken hostage, police officers were kidnapped and twenty people were killed. The government of President Daniel Noboa subsequently declared a state of emergency and designated 22 criminal organizations as terrorist organizations.

Attorney General Diana Salazar responded to Suarez’s death in a video. “The criminals and the terrorists will not stop our commitment to Ecuadorian society,” she said. “We call on the services to guarantee the safety of those who do their work.” She shared no further details about Suarez’s death.

Ecuador is an important country in the international cocaine trade.
