Prosecution Service Brings Charges Against Skippers in Fatal Wadden Sea Boat Accident

The Public Prosecution Service is prosecuting the skippers of the ferry and the water taxi who were involved in the boat accident on the Wadden Sea. Four people were killed last October. They are being charged with wrongful death and grievous bodily harm.

It concerns a 33-year-old man from Harlingen and a 47-year-old man from Terschelling.

Four people were killed in the collision. A 12-year-old child is still missing.

The skippers of the fast boat Tiger (a fast ferry) and water taxi Stormloper both sailed too fast and did not communicate properly, it says. ABOUT. Research showed that the fast boat sailed at 55 kilometers per hour, the water taxi at 28 kilometers per hour. In the Schuitengat, where the accident happened, boats are only allowed to sail at 20 kilometers per hour.

Moreover, the skippers knew that they were going to pass each other. This was previously apparent from an analysis of the VHF contact between the two vessels. According to the Public Prosecution Service, the skipper of the water taxi made an “incomprehensible and unsafe steering movement” just before the collision. “In the end, the skipper of the ferry could only sail over the water taxi.” One of the two skippers was also seriously injured.

The case against the ‘co-driver’ of the ferry is dropped. According to the Public Prosecution Service, he had no influence whatsoever on the control of the ship.

It is not yet known when the court in Leeuwarden will hear the case.
