The originally “standard” Italian sparkling wine has become a global hit, and its global consumption has been growing in recent years. And the Czechs are not far behind either, in 2022 almost ten million bottles were imported to us, which is almost 10 percent more than the previous year. Sales of Prosecco are expected to continue to rise in the coming years.
Why do we love prosecco?
It is very simple, these are the most basic reasons why more and more people like prosecco.
- Favorable price – Thanks to the bubbles, prosecco is indeed a pleasant alternative and above all cheaper than classic champagne. It’s just cheaper, so any celebration will be cheaper with it, which is definitely nice.
- It is easy – Of course there are differences, but in general it can be said that prosecco has an alcohol content of around 11 percent, champagne and white wine around one percent more, red wine up to 14 percent . Prosecco is light, fresh, and shouldn’t “overpower you” so easily.
- It comes together well – The indisputable advantage of Prosecco is that it combines well with other types of drinks, so you can mix several delicious drinks from it. For example, Aperol spritz is already a classic, but what about its counterpart limoncello spritz or the famous bellini cocktail with peach liqueur?
Prosecco versus Champagne
How is prosecco different from champagne? The main difference is in the method of production. Champagne is made by fermenting wine in the bottle, while prosecco is aged in large steel tanks for around 30 days. Higher quality prosecco marked with the DOCG trademark can be aged in this way for up to nine months.
What exactly is prosecco?
How do you choose the right prosecco? Beware of the common mistake, sparkling wine is not prosecco, just as not all sparkling wines are champagne. Only wine produced in one of the nine regions of the Veneto and Friuli-Venezia Giulia regions north of Trieste is called prosecco. And according to the blog Wine map According to strict regulations, prosecco is allowed to contain up to 15 percent of other types of wine. But the label itself will tell you the most important thing: “On it you will find basic information that will help you choose a quality prosecco.” You can find out who the producer is, the classification category according to residual sugar, alcohol content and important labels about the place of origin,” advises Denisa Kolaříková, sommelier of the Mionetto Prosecco brand.
DOC or DOCG
You must have noticed that prosecco bottles are always marked with the letters DOC or DOCG. This is the classic celebration of Italian wine (of any kind), just an Italian trademark.
- DOC – The most frequently granted trademark, which guarantees the consumer that the wine really comes from a specific area and meets various requirements for production, alcohol content, quality, etc.
- DOCG – The trademark, which is only awarded to wines that meet the strictest requirements, is therefore a guarantee of the very high quality of the wine provided. As for prosecco, it is a wine made from grapes that are harvested only in a small area between the towns of Valdobbiadene and Conegliano, north of Venice.
Is white wine spicy?
We may counter a common mistake that everyone believes – that prosecco with frizzante is not prosecco, but just “bubbled” white wine.
No, frizzante on the bottle means “shine” but spumante means “shine”, but both are prosecco. It is just the first one that has a classic screw cap, because there are fewer bubbles, and therefore lower pressure in the bottle. In layman’s terms, sparkling prosecco is clearer, requires a higher pressure in the bottle, which is why it is equipped with a classic cork stopper with a wire fuse.
Most people approach it in such a way that they are fine to drink regularly with frizzante, which is a little cheaper, but for celebrations where you just need to “pop the cork “, they choose the spumante variety.
Brut or dry?
As for the sweetness level of the prosecco, take note labels brut, extra dry and drywhich shows the proportion of sugar left. “If you prefer drier versions of wine, focus on the brut variety. For those who prefer sweeter, I recommend the dry version with a higher proportion of sugar per liter,” said Denisa Kolaříková, sommelier of the Mionetto Prosecco brand.
How to store prosecco properly
The bottle should be lying down and always in a cool and dark environment, with the ideal storage temperature between 4 and 6 degrees Celsius. You don’t have to worry, you don’t need a wine cellar or a special cellar, even your fridge offers ideal conditions for prosecco. However, keep in mind that you will enjoy this drink if you let it sit for at least 24 hours. This is the time prosecco needs to cool perfectly and properly.
How and what to drink prosecco?
And here we have another mistake that many prosecco lovers make. It is served in champagne glasses, in so-called flutes, but prosecco is drunk from other glasses. They are similar to those on champagne, but they are tulip-shaped, so they are much wider in the middle. “This type of glass allows the gradual release of aromas from the wine, and thanks to the round conical shape, the flavor does not escape as quickly. And this also extends the optimal wear time,” explained Kolaříková.
How about a first taste and make sure the prosecco is ok? It’s like wine, look for appearance, smell and taste. In the glass, prosecco must be slightly sparkling, clear and clean. This is basically like wine. It should smell slightly fruity and floral, and when you take your first sip, it should taste like you smelled.
The history of prosecco
The history of prosecco, as we know it, goes back to the 16th century, when Ribolla wine was produced around the city of Trieste. But people often confused it with other wines from this region, so it was renamed prosecco after a town with the same name. But the vineyards expanded, the yield grew, so today wines from a total of nine regions in the regions of Veneto and Friuli-Venezia Giulia north of Trieste are called prosecco. But now and then it is made from the Glera wine blend. It is also interesting that in 2019, the vineyards around the towns of Conegliano and Valdobbiadene were registered on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
