Proposed Cable Car Project to Connect Montpellier to Seaside Towns: The Solution to Economic and Environmental Challenges

For economic and environmental reasons, no public transport currently links the metropolis of Montpellier to the seaside towns of Carnon and Palavas. With its cable car project, the town hall of Pérols believes it has found the solution that overcomes these obstacles.

Two short kilometers separate the terminus of line 3, at Pérols, from Carnon beach. However, to date, no public transport links the Montpellier metropolis to the Hérault coast.

While extending the tram line would cost 60 million euros, the mayor of Pérols is proposing a solution three times cheaper. In three sections, a cable car could transport up to 2,000 people per hour from Peyrol to Carnon. Estimated travel time: 5 min 30 min.

“There would only be 350 meters left between the terminus and the beach”argues, full of hope, the mayor of Pérols Jean-Pierre Rico.

In a letter addressed to the president of the Montpellier metropolis, the elected official sets out the multiple advantages of such a project: “elimination of traffic jams” “while circumventing the modification of existing infrastructure.”

Especially since, according to him, “this transport ecosystem could take on the character of a unique tourist attraction on a national scale”.

Champion of mountain cable cars, France is currently exporting this model to its urban areas. Three cable cars already fly over Brest, Toulouse and Réunion, while others should see the light of day in Ajaccio, Créteil and Grenoble.

Montpellier, soon on the list of air-connected cities? Convinced of the interest of the project, Cerema (Center for studies and expertise on risks, mobility and planning) presented a study to the communities concerned.
