Following reports of oil spill sightings in the Verde Island Passage, the centre of marine biodiversity in the Philippines, Governor Humberto Dolor is supporting suggestions that government ban oil tankers from using the passage. More than 800,000 litres of “toxic” industrial fuel oil were lost from MT Princess Empress, which sank off Naujan, Oriental Mindoro on 28 February. Dolor stated passenger and fishing vessels solely should use the passage. President Duterte could introduce a presidential order initially to pave the way for permanent operations by Congress. An ROV has been sent by Japan to Balingawan Point in Oriental Mindoro to help contain the oil spill.
