Proposal to Abolish Gubernatorial Elections: Cost vs Authority

Jakarta

PKB chairman Muhaimin Iskandar (Cak Imin) again proposed that the election and governorship be abolished. According to Cak Imin, the cost of becoming a governor is not commensurate with his authority.

Cak Imin initially explained the steps for the election to become a healthy competition. First, said Cak Imin, the people must have political awareness and not be affected by money politics.

“So the people’s political awareness, an electoral system that is cheap, the competition is healthy. What gives opportunities to democratic ideals? Equality before the law and government, has equal rights before the law and government,” Cak Imin said at the event cultural speech at the Joang Building, Central Jakarta, as in the NU Channel YouTube broadcast, Friday (11/8/2023).

Cak Imin then brought up his suggestion that the gubernatorial elections and the post of governor be abolished. Cak Imin said that the political costs of becoming governor were expensive.

“One of them yesterday, I suggested, for example, that the gubernatorial election would be lost. If necessary, it would not only be the gubernatorial election, the governorship would also be lost. Why? Because this is a high-cost position in the political process, without clear and adequate authority, it is not balanced,” he said .

“It’s like the cost and authority are nothing… not balanced. The governor as an extension of the central government does not have significant authority in our government system, but on the other hand the political costs that must be built must be too expensive,” he added.

Furthermore, Cak Imin explained the second way for elections to take place in a healthy manner. He said that the election system must be simplified by revamping the system

“Simplification of the general election system, both legislative and executive, is one of the second stages here, revamping the system,” he said.

“The third stage is, of course, people’s sovereignty which is built on the initial spirit of deliberation and consensus, the implementation of which must be at all levels in decision-making,” he continued.

Cak Imin said reforms must continue. In addition, democracy is non-negotiable.

“This means that reform will continue, democracy is non-negotiable, the way of working from the people by the people for the people is the best way, but it must not run into the ideals, values, the basic formulation of our goal of living as a nation and a state,” explained Cak Imin.

Cak Imin regret if the election is only won by people who have money and capital. He then mentioned that elections are no longer for the people.

“Why do we have a democracy if only those with money win, if only those with capital decide what to do? This means that government ultimately says from the people by those who have money and for those who have money, that means oligarchy is happening,” he said.
