A metro that runs from the center via IJburg to Almere: it has been discussed for more than fifteen years, but concrete plans were never made. Now that the number of homes in Zeeburg and IJburg is increasing, the East district committee is once again calling on the city council to seriously investigate a metro line.
A tram line alone is no longer enough, the district committee believes. Zeeburgereiland will be a densely populated neighborhood and, according to the factions, this will cause a lot of so-called ‘traffic movements’. The committee expects that the need for more public transport connections on IJburg will only increase once other housing projects, such as Centrumeiland, Strandeiland and Buiteneiland, are completely completed.
For those who want to get to the center from Zeeburg or IJburg by public transport, tram 26 is currently the only option. While the number of people who will need the tram is increasing, the line is already overloaded, according to the district committee.
She therefore suggests using the money that will be released if the North/South line is not extended for the line to Almere. The financing of the first project came into question after the government (partly) withdrew its commitment to pay the lion’s share of the costs in September.
100,000 new homes
The idea of extending an Amsterdam metro line to Almere has been around for decades. Amsterdam, Almere and the government still consider it important that this connection is created for people who move there in the coming years. Between IJburg and Almere (also called the Amsterdam Bay Area mentioned), 100,000 homes must be built in the coming years.
Yet no concrete plans have ever been made for such a so-called IJmeer connection. This is mainly due to the fact that the parties cannot agree on what the connection should look like. Amsterdam would like to stick to just a metro line, but Almere and the province of Flevoland would also like to see a car connection over the water.
