Alexandria – Muhammad Amer and Muhammad Al-Badri:
The Karmouz area in the western Alexandria neighborhood witnessed a disaster that affected several properties, late on Thursday evening, as a 5-storey, unoccupied property collapsed, for which a demolition order had been issued.
The collapse of the aforementioned property occurred without any loss of life, but the disaster has not ended yet, as the collapsed property caused a severe tilt to another property consisting of a ground floor and 9 upper floors.
The Civil Protection Forces in Alexandria evacuated the residents of the leaning property and about 11 other houses and properties in its vicinity from all directions to ensure their safety, in preparation for determining its fate and demolishing it.
The Karmouz Police Department received a report from the Rescue Police Department stating that a property collapse had occurred on Mandara Street in the department’s district. The department’s officers, accompanied by civil protection forces and ambulances, moved to the location of the report.
The leaders of the executive and security services of Alexandria Governorate and engineer Sahar Shaaban, head of the Gharb district, were present at the accident site, and traffic barriers were placed around the property to preserve the safety of passers-by.
The examination revealed that the property was vacant, consisting of 4 floors and a ground floor. A demolition decision had been issued for it 7 years ago, and the property had collapsed to the surface of the ground without causing any injuries or deaths.
The inspection revealed that the collapse of the property caused a neighboring property, consisting of ground floor and 9 floors, to tilt dangerously, representing an imminent danger to all surrounding properties.
A source in the Gharb neighborhood reported that the tilted property was built without a permit and a demolition order was issued to the surface of the ground, and it was inhabited by only 5 families, who were immediately removed by civil protection forces.
The district issued an administrative decision to temporarily and urgently evacuate 11 properties in the vicinity of the collapsed and tilted properties, until the tilted property is demolished, in order to preserve the safety of citizens and passers-by.
A report on the incident was filed at the Karmouz Police Department, and the Public Prosecution Office initiated the investigation.
