Proper Watering Techniques for Growth and Protection of Plants in High Temperatures

The hot summer is behind us, yet we are still accompanied by days with high temperatures and no rain. Therefore, we may face problems with insufficient watering of our crops in the garden or our ornamental flowers. Poorly watered plants grow more poorly, produce poorly and are more susceptible to attack by parasites and fungi. Therefore, it is necessary to ensure sufficient irrigation.

A screwdriver like a toothpick

When you check if the cake is done, you use a toothpick – after you poke it into the dough, you will know if the dough is cooked enough.

Similarly, you can use a screwdriver to test whether the soil in which your vegetables or flowers are growing is sufficiently moist. When you stick the screwdriver straight into the ground, it should go smoothly to a depth of about fifteen centimeters. If it succeeds, then it is a sign that the land has sufficient irrigation. If it is difficult and you have to push the screwdriver a lot, then the soil is dry and you need to water it better.

How to properly water

It is definitely better to water the garden less and more often. Choose a time of day when the sun is not yet (or already) at full strength, so that the water does not start to dry immediately. It should be able to penetrate deep into the soil and thus refresh the roots. It is also ideal to water with standing water and pour the water directly on the ground, not spraying it directly on the plants.

In addition, most plants generally do not do well in direct sunlight, so choose the place where you will place them well when planting. Habitats where the sun’s rays reach, but the plants are also partially protected by shade, are suitable. At the same time, this measure will allow the soil to retain water better.

Don’t forget to nourish the soil as well

Even plants grown outdoors need nutrition, just like houseplants. However, you don’t need to fertilize them with expensive store-bought fertilizers. Classic compost or the use of wood ash will be plenty for them – you can either spread it around the plants and cover it a little, or add it to the watering.
