Proper Techniques for Diving and Swimming to Protect Your Health

In the summer, during the holiday season, we spend much more time near the water – seas, pools, rivers and lakes. Anton Rizaev, an otorhinolaryngologist at SM-Clinic, told Health Mail.ru how to dive and swim properly so as not to harm your health.

Let’s figure it out. The mucous membrane in the nasal cavity contains a large number of goblet cells that secrete mucus, and is also covered with numerous microscopic cilia, which in synchronous movements cause it to move from front to back, into the nasopharynx.

This mechanism is called “mucociliary transport”, it helps the body fight respiratory infections, purify and moisten the air entering the lungs. Prolonged and frequent contact with fresh water, or vice versa, with sea water can damage delicate cilia.

The safest concentration for them would be 0.9% NaCl, such a solution is also called physiological. However, in most bodies of water, the salt concentration is either much higher or much lower, which, if it enters the nose, causes irritation of the mucous membrane, causing a natural desire to prevent it. Hence – an attempt to pinch his nose with his hand. However, to cause significant damage to the mucosa, really long and frequent contact with water is required.

To ensure efficient and safe swimming both on the surface of the water and underwater, we need both hands. Therefore, pinching your nose with your hand is not an option. In most cases, swimmers take long breaths into the water through their nose, thus preventing water from entering there.

This method – when diving to exhale slowly through the nose – is also optimal for most people who relax on the sea or visit a water park.

In this case, a small amount of water may enter the nose, but it is not enough to harm the mucous membrane.

In the case when this method is not suitable, for example, with a long and frequent stay under water in an inverted position, as is the case with synchronized swimming, special nose clips, which are easy to find in any sporting goods store, will help.
