Four people were arrested during the clashes and taken to the police station. Two of these were reported at large for resistance, violence and injury to a public official. The position of the other two is being examined. For now, the number of injured among the police forces has risen to 30 (26 policemen and 4 soldiers from the Gdf) and 40 people have been dismissed.

“What happened today in Rome confirms the validity of the reasons underlying the ban issued by the Rome police headquarters.” This is what sources from the Ministry of the Interior reveal. «The decision – they explain from the Interior Ministry – arose on the basis of assessments linked to information acquired in recent weeks which suggested risks to public order. The first critical factor was represented by the infiltrators intending to use a large demonstration to blend into a larger procession and attack sensitive targets as well as the police forces, as actually happened in Piazzale Ostiense”.

«It is a pattern already seen on other occasions which sees the violent fringes camouflage themselves among the peaceful demonstrators and then be able to unleash violence. The second risk factor was related to possible provocations and consequent clashes with occasional opposing fringes in the center of Rome”, underline sources from the Interior Ministry. «For this reason – the same sources conclude – based on this information and consequent assessments, the inevitable decision was made to ban the demonstration, above all to avoid the formation of a procession through the streets of Rome which would have been difficult to control.
