Promotion or Cup? Boldt: “I would always take both”

Hamburger SV will play against SC Freiburg on April 19 for a place in the DFB Cup final and still have nine games in the Bundesliga 2 to look forward to in which promotion is at stake. But there is no either-or for Jonas Boldt – the sports director is aiming for the cup and the 1st Bundesliga.

A lot is different at Hamburger SV this year. Instead of establishing themselves early on at the top of the table, the Hanseatic League under Tim Walter have developed into a pursuer who is seven points behind the relegation place in one game less than the competition. At first glance, that seems like a big mortgage, but the past few games have shown that anything is possible in the 2nd Bundesliga – and HSV has been extremely stable this season.

HSV dances at two weddings

Although Walter and his family have already had to settle for eleven draws (league high), no other club has lost fewer games (four) and conceded fewer goals (26). If the rise succeeds after four years, everyone involved could say goodbye to the summer vacation with satisfaction. But HSV also has the opportunity to dot the icing on the cake for the 2021/22 season by winning the DFB Cup.

Boldt wants promotion and the cup

With 1. FC Köln, a Bundesliga club was already defeated in the round of 16, and SC Freiburg is now waiting in the semi-finals. Although the Black Forest are playing for a place in the Champions League, HSV has so far only lost the derby against Werder Bremen on February 27 (2:3) in the Volksparkstadion. In an interview with the Editorial network Germany Jonas Boldt was accordingly aggressive and when asked whether he would rather win the cup or advance, he replied that he “would always take both”. “That doesn’t necessarily sound like the much-cited humility, but we will always strive for sporting success,” said the sports director.

“Now the crunch time begins”

There is great hope that the big hit will finally succeed: “I think our team is now much more resilient. […] In the past few years we had a clear lead in points, but that’s not the case now.” It remains to be seen whether these two factors will help to achieve the sporting goals. “Now,” says Boldt, “crunch time begins.”
