The J&O Foundation pays attention to World Alzheimer’s Day and Neighbors’ Day

OUDE PEKELA – Because neighborhoods become more fun, social and safer when neighbors meet each other, help each other and work together for the neighborhood, the Leefvorm J&O Foundation has paid attention to both World Alzheimer’s Day and Neighbors’ Day. They did this on September 21 during World Alzheimer’s Day and on September 22 and 23 during a Neighborhood Breakfast.
SEPTEMBER 21: WORLD ALZHEIMER’S DAY
World Alzheimer’s Day is a theme day to promote global attention for Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. The day is celebrated every year on September 21. “It is important that attention is paid to an increasingly large group of people with dementia (which has different forms). Alzheimer’s Day gives substance to this. In addition, it ensures greater understanding and breaking the taboo. Dementia is not something to be ashamed of. It can happen to anyone and it is important to learn to live with it. With small adjustments, people can continue to live independently for longer and simply participate. After all, that’s what everyone wants.” According to the Leefvorm J&O Foundation. The OdensehuisPekela would also like to see more attention paid to residents with Dementia and their informal caregivers in Pekela. She would like to draw attention to the Social Approach to Dementia. This approach looks differently at the situation of people with dementia by re-focusing attention on questions from daily life and focusing not on the disease but on the person. This often improves the quality of life, both for people with dementia and for their caregivers. To draw attention to this problem, OdensehuisPekela (in the context of dementia-friendly neighborhoods) organized a film afternoon at the Siep&Co location. During this afternoon the light-hearted film Casa Coco was shown, in which the situation surrounding a man with early dementia was discussed. The visitors were treated to home-baked forget-me-not cookies and also received the forget-me-not pin in honor of World Alzheimer’s Day.
The reactions were positive and visitors indicated that they enjoyed drawing attention to dementia in this way. It was a successful, relaxed afternoon in which there was room for understanding, support and conviviality.
SEPTEMBER 22 and 23: THE NEIGHBORHOOD BREAKFAST
A neighborhood breakfast was organized at the initiative of a resident of Oude Pekela, who is affiliated with the Leefvorm J&O (Young and Old) Foundation. This breakfast was supported by the Leefvorm J&O Foundation (Young & Old) and was made possible by Jumbo Pekela and Boxes in Stock. The neighborhood breakfast was offered to about fifty residents in Oude Pekela, mainly seniors. In Appollolaan and Scheepshellingstraat and 5 residents elsewhere in the village. The breakfast boxes of residents who were not at home were taken to Ora La Bora. It was nice to see how surprised some residents were and greatly appreciated that this initiative came from a resident of Pekela.
