“Promoting the Gallo-Roman Sanctuary of Saint-Martin au Val: A Student-led Project by Jehan-de-Beauce High School”

Promoting the Gallo-Roman sanctuary of Saint-Martin au Val is the collective project carried out by students from the second to the final year, at the Jehan-de-Beauce high school, as part of optional education.

The options are an optional device that allows students to explore personal interests related or not to a career plan. This project was presented in preview to the headmaster, Bruno Couet.

About sixty students took part, under the direction of their history-geography and art history teachers, Olivier Bougot and Guillaume Leproust.

The Gallo-Roman sanctuary of Saint-Martin au Val is a religious complex dating from the 1 is century AD, one of the largest unearthed in the Roman world. This sanctuary, dedicated to Apollo, has been excavated since 2006. “The project is part of a process of appropriating local heritage and is also a way for our students to explore their personal interests, often in relation to a vocational guidance project”, explain the two professors.

Divided into small groups, the students, at the rate of two hours per week, explored the possibility of creating three potential museums dedicated to the sanctuary: a virtual museum with a model; the museum of the future, on the current remains, with a model; and a dedicated website.

For each stage, they carried out documentary research, chose a scenography, etc. Nothing has been forgotten, nor the symbolism of the color blue in line with the stained glass windows of the cathedral!

Bruno Couet declared himself to be very admiring of the result: “Experimenting with the management of such a project allows the students to work as a team, to divide up the functions and tasks, to learn to manage their time, to to understand communication and marketing and to open up culturally. The pupils of the outsourced teaching unit also took part in this project. “Culture and art must be considered as integration factors in the same way as social consideration. This is part of the inclusive school”, recalls the Principal.

Justine and Chloé think of moving towards architecture and it is with a real architect’s project that they have been confronted within the framework of this project. Tasha, who worked on the website, is thinking about going into IT.

On June 16 and 17, during the European Archeology Days, high school students will have a stand to present their project on the Saint Martin au Val site.
