Promoting Sexual and Reproductive Health Education in Morocco and Tunisia: The AMPF Project

The project “Supporting the commitment and state of civil society in the implementation of comprehensive sexuality education in Tunisia and Morocco”, launched at the initiative of the Family Planning Association (AMPF), was presented , Friday in Rabat, in the presence of government, UN and association representatives.

Sponsored by the Spanish Agency for International Cooperation and Development (AECID) and implemented in Morocco and Tunisia in collaboration with the Arab world regional office of the International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF), this project lasting one year is part of promoting universal access to sexual and reproductive health services, particularly in terms of family planning, information, education and integration of reproductive health into national strategies and programs .

The main objective of the project is to accelerate the implementation of comprehensive sexuality education at school and extracurricular level in Morocco and Tunisia.

Presenting this project, IPPF representative Sadik Amine Ben Hassine highlighted the efforts made in Morocco and Tunisia to provide sex education in school curricula.

In association with out-of-school learning, this formal education could help improve the knowledge of young people, while preventing several harmful social phenomena with deleterious effects on the health and well-being of young people, he added.

This project was launched in 2023 through a workshop in Tunis, for the benefit of young people, including case studies and information adapted to the contexts and legal frameworks of Morocco and Tunisia, he recalled, evoking the creation of a game to address sexual and reproductive issues in a fun way.

Approached by the MAP, the president of the AMPF, Khadija Elghalemi, indicated that the project aims to promote comprehensive sexuality education with a view to integrating it into the school curriculum through the establishment of workshops involving the departments National Education, Preschool and Sports; Solidarity, Women, Family and Social Development; Youth and Communication; and Health and Social Protection.

The association made sure to share the said project with the various ministries in order to put in place a guide for comprehensive sexual education, she noted, highlighting the importance of the game in raising awareness among young people regarding health. sexual and reproductive.

For his part, the executive director of AMPF, Abdellatif Maamri declared that the achievements of the project in Morocco via the open Access digital platform have allowed young people to access all digital media in order to develop their knowledge in matters of comprehensive sex education.

Sex education plays a crucial role both in and out of school in providing young people with the knowledge to understand their own bodies, interpersonal relationships and the complex aspects of sexuality. At school, it helps promote student health, while making them aware of existing risks.

Outside of the school context, after-school programs can complement this education by providing safe spaces for discussion to address more personal issues and encourage mutual respect.

Comprehensive and accessible sexuality education not only contributes to the prevention of sexual health risks, such as sexually transmitted infections and out-of-wedlock pregnancies, it also promotes the development of responsible, respectful and self-aware individuals. being and that of others.
